Newfie.com is looking for help

Newfie.com has been in operation since 1998. In that time the site has served over a million and a half visitors. You may be wondering why the site has been lacking in updates and new content. This is primarily because the site was being threatened by its own popularity. What does this mean?

The site was popular largely due to the jokes and associated files available on it. The data transfer that the site used to support this popularity was huge (huge for a site run by a single person primarily for fun). The site started at around 4 gigabytes of data transfer in 1998. In 1999 the data transfer went up every month and averages around 20 gigabytes per month. The year 2000 saw more growth and the site averaged over 40 gigabytes of data transfer per month.

In late 2000 the provider that hosts the server for the site informed me that the monthly cost for hosting the site would need to increase dramatically to cover what it was using. I could not afford this and so I decided to let the site remain as it was for the most part and let nature take it's course. Some of the larger files were removed and the remaining files that were larger were zipped to save space and reduce the data transfer. The traffic to the site has declined to an extent but the data transfer remains at over 15 gigabytes a month.

What does this mean in dollars and cents? Newfie.com has cost just under $15,000 to keep alive since 1998. Times have changed and money is becoming more of an issue.
